From the start of invasion of Russia, the German army came across unexpected Russian rivals, the T34 medium tanks and KV-1 heavy tanks. Germany was forced to hurry the development of the Tiger I Heavy Tank, which had the potential to counter Russian Tanks. Its successor, nicknamed "King Tiger", was called the strongest tank in WWII with its production turret, or Henschel turret, boasting 150-180mm thick armor, a 71 caliber 88mm gun, and posed a great threat to the Allied forces right until the surrender of Germany.
